Installing a Brand New Hard Drive

I bought a Seagate 500 GB SATA internal hard disk drive (Model #ST3500641AS-RK) from Fry's Electronics.

(A note for older computers: before buying a hard drive, please open the computer case and identify what type of hard drive interface such as the latest SATA (Serial ATA) interface or the older AT attachment interface does the motherboard support.)

The box of Seagate hard disk:

The packaging comes with the simplified diagrams for internal hard drive installation:

A simplified instructions for installing a brand new hard drive for Linux:
  1. Unplug the power cord and open the case
  2. Figure out the SATA cable and power cable locations
  3. I would recommend to left the old original hard drive (usually where the Windows stored) as is at the old location.
  4. Install the new hard drive. Usually, there is additional hard drive rack next to the old hard drive (HDD). Secure it with screws and a screwdriver.
  5. Unplug the SATA cable from the old HDD and plug it into the new HDD. Similarly, do it for the power cable as well.
  6. If I want to run Ubuntu Linux, I would recommend to leave the old HDD with Windows disconnected.
  7. Close the case and plug in the power cord
